I gladiatori dopo il combattimento
October 24, 2009 - February 14, 2010
Cava de' Tirreni
In the old monastery of Santa Maria of Rifugio, where the Galleria Civica d'Arte is situated, about 50 masterpieces among paintings, sculptures and archaeological finds can be admired.
After the success of Goya's exhibition Il segno di Goya, the Galleria Civica d'Arte from 24th October 2009 to 14th February 2010, will host the fascinating exhibition Giorgio de Chirico: La suggestione del classico.
This outstanding exhibition, curated by Matilde Romito, Sabina d'Angelosante, Victoria Noel-Johnson, promoted by Comune of Cava de'Tirreni and Provincia of Salerno, organized and developed by Alef-cultural project management, will show about 50 works, produced between the twenties and seventies, which can explain the relationship between the metaphysical artist and the classical Greek world.
It is an inedited expositive project to increase the value of the rich collections of the Archaeological Museums and to explain one of the main reasons of the artist's painting which shows his tendency to be influenced from the past. The elements of the archaic world take up most of the set of his artistic production, thanks to a language which can link old and modern style.
The Mediterranean, a large place of history and culture, played a very important role in the metaphysical movement and in the de Chirico's evolution, giving the image of philosophy, poetry, sculpture and paint's knowledge. So Giorgio de Chirico looks at classicism with the sensibility and care of an archaeologist but, at the same time, with the romantic core of a passionate collector of the classical sculptures.
The soul, forms and characters of the Greek myth, the bright silences of the southern landscape has been the inspiration of de Chirico's work, which was represented in the marble heads, amphora and in statues maintained by the most important archaeological Italians museums.
"Without the discovery of the past is not possible the discovery of the present", said de Chirico.
Many of his works are drawn from real places in which de Chirico lived and Volos, the Greek town where he spent his childhood, was the source of his inspiration.
